Saving water growing crops

app.kba-coverage.contributions.title 71.1%

The SWAT project is dedicated to promoting an innovative irrigation technology within the Shouf Biosphere Reserve (SBR) to combat water scarcity exacerbated by climate change. This technology, currently being tested in targeted agricultural areas, demonstrates a remarkable reduction in water and energy consumption compared to conventional methods. Aligned with prior studies identifying water deficit as a critical issue in the SBR, the project employs a sensor-network technology. This allows farmers to optimize water usage according to plant requirements, thus bolstering resilience against climate change impacts. Utilizing ground sensors, climate data, weather forecasts, and satellite imagery, the solution provides precise irrigation advice, resulting in significant water and energy savings. Moreover, beyond addressing water scarcity, the project contributes to the local economy by freeing up resources for other essential purposes. Ultimately, the SWAT project champions sustainable agriculture and fortifies resilience against climate change in the region.
