Restoration of Comino’s Saline Wetland
The Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) is responsible for managing Malta's protected areas under the EU's Habitats and Birds Directives. In December 2021, ERA partnered with PAP/RAC (part of UNEP’s Mediterranean Action Plan) to develop a Restoration Plan for a coastal wetland on the Natura 2000 island of Comino. The nine-month project, funded by SIDA aimed to restore degraded wetland habitat. Developed by BirdLife Malta and University of Malta experts, the plan included expanding the wetland, restoring native vegetation, removing invasive species, proposing indigenous plant reintroduction, and recommending hydrological and engineering measures to support avifauna. Implementation began in June 2022 with Ambjent Malta, focusing on invasive species removal, planting native flora, and engineering interventions.
