Translocation of 4 Przewalski's horses from Hustai National Park to Khomyn Tal National Park to maintain genetic diversity of this population

Khomyn Tal National park houses the third reintroduction project of Przewalski’s horses in Mongolia. It started in 2004 with the action of the French NGO TAKH and is now run by the Mongol NGO KTT. The founding population consists of 26 individuals, in 2025 around 165 Przewalski’s horses lives in the park. But since 2011, no new horses have been brought to this project. In order to increase the genetic diversity and to reduce the inbreeding coefficient of this population, it was planned to transport 4 horses from Hustai National Park (Mongolia). This park has a Przewalski's horses population since1992 and is the biggest one in Mongolia in 2025. Sadly, the transport couldn't be done during the 2021-2025 quadrennium and has been postpone to the next one. The main issue is to have access to the anesthetic drugs : they are forbidden in Mongolia. Also the research of funding to complete the budget is still ongoing and the method of transport is still discuted : by land or by air.
