The Orinoco savannas in Arauca and Vichada are some of the best-preserved natural plains in Colombia and South America. They encompass a diversity of ecosystems including flooded and well-drained savannas, riparian forests, and wetlands, as well as remnant populations of keystone and charismatic species. They are also home to a unique cultural diversity, and various indigenous peoples who protect the territory, along with peasant communities who preserve llanero traditions. This landscape faces transformation processes derived mainly from the expansion of agribusiness and the increased frequency of fires, which exacerbate the potential threat of water stress. For these reasons, our objective is to ensure biodiversity conservation by informing landscape planning processes and the sustainable growth of productive sectors, supporting the management of conservation areas, and implementing actions that improve the conditions of local inhabitants around the sustainable use of biodiversity.
