Lower Río Negro
Currently, the lower Rio Negro region, protecs approximately 7.3 million hectares. Large areas of important ecosystems are represented, including approximately 6 million hectares (ha) of dryland forests, 6,320 km of terra firme forests, 6,320 km of rivers and streams, 700,000 ha of igapó forests, 60,000 ha of campinas and 100 thousand hectares of campinaranas, besides extensive sandbanks and beaches that appear during dry periods. The Lower Rio Negro also protects important populations of endangered species, such as the common sauimde, five species of freshwater species chelonians, manatees, river dolphin, and jaguar. These ecosystems and species provide important services important for the maintenance of life and in particular, for human populations, both for local communities, who depend directly on the directly use of natural resources such as clean air, water and food, and for populations outside the region, through carbon stocks and contribution to maintaining a stable global clim
