Vatu-i-Ra Seascape
Stretching across the waters of Fiji’s two main islands of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, Vatu-i-Ra Seascape is a jewel of forests and reefs. This 27,000 km2 seascape holds great ecological and cultural significance. The area’s vibrant waters are laced with coral reefs, including 300 reef-building coral species, more than 1,000 fish species, sharks, cetaceans, endangered sea turtles, and seabirds. The adjoining landscape is also highly diverse, including at least 120 plant species unique to the area, and the endemic crested and banded iguanas. Indigenous knowledge and practices of local communities are closely linked with the environment. The area is home to ancestral fishing grounds, cultural heritage sites, and plays a significant role in the cultural identity and livelihoods of local communities.
