Terrestrial Patagonia
A rugged, vast landscape shaped by ancient volcanoes and incessant winds, the steep mountains, deep canyons, and high plateaus of the Terrestrial Patagonia Stronghold harbor a unique wildlife community that fascinated and inspired Darwin nearly two centuries ago. The 1,2 millon km2 landscape is a stronghold of the guanaco, Darwin's rhea, Andean condor and puma. For the last 20 years, WCS has worked closely with local communities, partners and authorities to restore and preserve the awe-inspiring wilderness of the area. Within the landscape WCS has contributed greatly to the increase of the area under protection, the effective management of reserves, the design and implementation of wildlife-friendly and regenerative livestock husbandry, and promotion of policy and practices to reduce and mitigate impacts on biodiversity by the oil and gas industry and climate change.
