The Lesser Sunda eco-region, which is part of the Coral Triangle, is considered a priority conservation region in Indonesia. Within the region, marine passages around the Province of West Nusa Tenggara (WNT) are a habitat for a rich variety of coral reefs, abundant pelagic and reef fishes, and a corridor for migratory turtle, dolphin, and whale species. WCS Indonesia Program (WCS IP) works in WNT to support the government. For simplification purposes, the stronghold is connected as one, although WCS IP works only in the limited areas within the WNT as shown in the stronghold map.
