Marine and Coastal Biodiversity Conservation in Anfeh Mina
Funded by The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP) and implemented by IndyAct in partnership with the Marine and Coastal Resources Program, Institute of the Environment at the University of Balamand, the project aimed to provide scientific evidence on marine resources found in Anfeh to inform relevant decision makers and enable the development of an action plan to protect the area’s coastal biodiversity. The scope of the project was to implement a comprehensive baseline assessment for Anfeh-MPA in support to its official declaration. The assessment built on existing knowledge and employed established methodologies that resulted in collecting information on: 1) Juveniles and adults of motile species. 2) Sessile species colonizing rocky and sandy habitats. 3) Water quality parameters indicating the profile of Anfeh’s water column during the study period. 4) Grain size (granulometry) in the study area indicating the prevailing hydrodynamic energy. 5) Possibility of introducing a Citizen-based monitoring systems (CBMS) and propose such a system for the A-MPA. 6) Potential local management of fisheries through the introduction of a catch/effort system FLOUCA-COOP (Fish Landings Operational Utility for Catch Assessment for Cooperatives) to the Anfeh Cooperative of Fishermen (A-CF).
