Wadi’s Native Plant Nursery in Salt

In partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), Wadi established a community-based native plant nursery in Al-Wassiyyeh, located within an oak forest ecosystem. The nursery produces high-quality native seedlings, including forest trees, medicinal herbs, and rangeland shrubs. Currently, the nursery cultivates over 35 native species found in Jordan, such as Pistacia atlantica, Retama raetam, Artemisia herba-alba, Thymus bovei, Acacia gerardii, and Haloxylon persicum. With an annual production capacity of 30,000 seedlings, it contributes to restoration efforts across the country. The nursery also functions as a training and outreach center, engaging local communities in native plant propagation, nursery operations, and ecosystem restoration practices. In parallel, Wadi collects, treats, and stores native seeds, applying site-specific germination techniques and working closely with nursery staff to refine propagation protocols. Efforts are underway to establish a seed bank that will ensure the long-term conservation of native genetic resources using best-practice storage techniques. The vision is for the nursery to evolve into a regional hub for forest restoration and biodiversity conservation in the Al-Salt region, anchored in community participation and serving as a replicable model for sustainable ecosystem management.
