Established in 1905, the Forest Service is an agency of the US Department of Agriculture. The USFS manages public lands in national forests & grasslands, which encompass 193 million acres. Our mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation’s forests & grasslands to meet the needs of present & future generations. The USFS is also the largest forestry research organization in the world, and provides technical & financial assistance to state & private forestry agencies.
