Copenhagen Zoo was founded in 1859 and is one of the oldest zoos in Europe and has been a member of IUCN since 1985. The zoo works actively with education, in-situ and ex-situ conservation which is supported by research. This is the foundation of the zoo. The zoo manages conservation projects globally with its own teams and is not a grant-giving institution but works through many long-term and locally rooted collaborations and partnerships. The zoo is also a cultural institution with social responsibilities of increasing the public’s interest in and understanding of nature and its diversity through enjoyable and informative communication.
